FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 2007 Youth of YearPueblo, CO, February 13, 2007 -- Michelle Velasquez was selected as the 2007 Youth of the Year for the Boys & Girls Club/Girls Inc. of Pueblo County & Lower Arkansas Valley. The national program recognizes superior leadership skills, academic achievement, obstacles overcome and outstanding service to Boys & Girls Clubs and the community.A member of the Club for four years, Michelle is a positive role model for boys and girls that attend the Club and has been able to give good advice based on her experiences and good judgment. In March she represented Pueblo at the state level in Denver. The 14-year-old, is not one to "go with the flock." She has a strong sense of right and wrong and is not afraid to stand up for what she believes in. Michelle surrounds herself with positive people and in many activities and programs in school, at the Club and with her family. It is this sense of belonging that has enabled her to grow and develop a strong moral character. A eighth grader at Pitts Middle School, Velasquez participates in numerous extracurricular activities. Velasquez says, "Boys & Girls Club/Girls Inc. is one of the reasons for her positive attitude and her intentions to pursue a degree." Her persona in and out of the Club setting has always been of an active leader and she has become involved in the Power Hour homework and tutoring program and as a Teen Leader at the Pitkin Center located at Keating Educational Center. # # #
